In the late 19th century, dental health in Britain was at an abominable low point. The urbanization process during the Industrial Revolution completely altered people’s diets. Fresh fruits and vegetables were scarce, and sugar consumption was at an all-time high. The new urban diet was the source of widespread tooth decay and tooth loss, especially among children, explains the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

A 1932 study published in the British Medical Journal suggested that a change in diet can reverse tooth decay. The researchers concluded that a deficiency of minerals, fat-soluble vitamins, and overconsumption of phytic acid and processed sugar causes tooth decay.

Public speaker and author David Wolfe used the 1932 study to make an argument for a 5-step solution to fighting tooth decay and healing cavities. Continue reading to find out why Wolfe’s 5-step plan works!

1. Eliminate sugar. Nova Scotia Dental Association explains that sugar helps cavity-causing plaque to multiply quickly into a thick, large substance that, in the case of some bacteria, actually acts as a glue. 2. Consume nutrient-rich foods. This rule is the same for promoting health and staving off disease in all parts of the body. Precision Nutrition reminds us that periodontal disease is linked to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Calcium, phosphorous, zinc, folate, iron, omega-3 fats, B vitamins, and vitamins A, C, and D are all essential for oral health. The best way to protect against tooth decay is to eat a whole diet centered on lean protein and fresh vegetables.

3. Practicing oral pulling. Oral pulling is an Ayurvedic tradition that dates back 3,000 years to ancient India. Oral pulling therapy is performed by gently swishing a tablespoon of oil in the mouth for approximately 20 minutes or until the oil turns a milky white color. The oil should then be spit into the trash and never swallowed. Oil pulling works by pulling microbes off the teeth. According to the founder and owner of Sugar Fix Dental Loft, Dr. Jessica T. Emery, in an article on Dentistry IQ, oil pulling does not reverse the effects of tooth decay. It is, however, a useful therapy that prevents cavities and tooth decay when used alongside regular toothbrushing and flossing (twice daily).

4. Eliminate phytic acid. According to the Foundation of Alternative and Integrative Medicine, phytic acid blocks the absorption of such minerals as calcium, which is necessary for healthy tooth structure. Phytic acid is found in unfermented grains like oatmeal, breakfast cereal, and crackers. Avoiding all unfermented grains containing phytic acid is best to prevent cavities.

5. Use mineralizing toothpaste. Minerals are essential to fighting cavities and tooth decay. Colgate explains that when tooth enamel weakens, it loses mineral content. The best way to replace the lost mineral content (in addition to eating mineral-rich foods) is to use mineralizing toothpaste, which replaces the lost minerals. Teeth tartar, while tartare can be a tasty dish, is something we fear. This is a more serious form of plaque. It occurs when you forget to brush, floss and rinse. Too much tartar can cause gum disease and make your teeth more sensitive. It’s also very unpleasant to see when you open your mouth.

Baking soda, salt

This simple but effective way to remove tartar is a good place to start. Baking soda is an effective antibacterial agent and can also be used to whiten teeth.

Combine one tablespoon of baking soda and a pinch of salt. Use some of the mixtures to brush your teeth. You can also add it to regular toothpaste. Baking soda can cause enamel damage and should not be used more than once per week.

Orange peel

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is another thing you can find in your kitchen cupboard. This is a very popular method of oil pulling. Oil can absorb dirt from the mouth and has antibacterial properties against microorganisms.

For 10-15 minutes, swirl 1-2 tbsp oil in your mouth. It tastes amazing! Then, spit the oil out and rinse with warm water.

Strawberries, tomatoes

Vitamin S is abundant in tomatoes and strawberries, so you can use them even if citrus isn’t your thing. You can chop either one of these fruits and make a pulp. The pulp is then applied to your teeth. Let it sit for five minutes before you rinse your mouth.

Glycerin and Aloe vera

This whole mixture is good for your teeth. To make a smooth paste, mix one teaspoon of aloe vera gel with 4 tsp of vegetable glycerin and ten drops of lemon essential oils in 1 cup water.

Use this paste to brush your teeth once daily until tartar becomes less noticeable. Repeat the process every three to four days. Essential lemon oil fights germs and helps heal your gums and teeth.

Cloves

The pain relief of toothache has been a long-standing practice using this spice. It can also be used to fight microbes. The cloves can be ground or made into a powder. Once the oil has cooled, mix the olive oil with the paste and apply it to the stained areas.

You can also chew cloves regularly to kill bacteria and reduce bad breath. It can be used in place of chewing gum.

Sanguinaria (bloodroot)

One of the most bizarre ingredients is sanguinaria, also known as bloodroot. Toothpaste often contains its extract. It is safe and effective in reducing tartar.

To make a mouthwash, add 3-4 drops of sanguinaria extract to a cup of warm water. You can gargle it every day or even twice daily.
